Where are the pickles?

December, 2009

“Mom, do we have any dill pickles?”

“Yes, look in the refrigerator.”

“There are many things in the refrigerator. Where should I look?”

“Start on the top shelf and work your way down. If you don’t see any there, look on the door.”

Moments later…

“Mom, when was the last time you cleaned out the refrigerator?” (These are remarks coming from an 18 yr. old boy whose bathroom should be condemned by the Health Dept.)

“I really can’t remember. While you’re in there, if you see anything that needs to be thrown out, go ahead and do it.”

Moments later…

“This is nasty. All the vegetables are swimming in yellow water, and the broccoli is fuzzy”

“Sounds like they need to go. Would you please wash out the vegetable drawer?”

Moments later…

“Ok, I’ve filled up the trash can and I need another garbage bag.”

“Take it to the trash can and I’ll get another bag for you. If you need any more, just look under the sink.”

Moments later…

“Mom, I finished the shelves and I must say that I’ve never seen the refrigerator so empty.”

“I think you’ve done an excellent job. Don’t forget to wipe down the shelves. Did you find the pickles?”

“Not yet, but I’ll look on the door.”

Moments later…

“Mom, the Yakisoba sauce expired in 2001. That was eight years ago. How could you keep something so long?”

“I promise you, I didn’t. I must have bought an old bottle when we moved into the new house 4 years ago and I just didn’t look at the expiration date.”

“Will, don’t you know your mother tries to push the envelope with the expiration dates. The refrigerator is like her laboratory. It’s a wonder that she hasn’t given us food poisoning.”

“Don’t tempt me. You better examine what you get for dinner tonight before you eat it.”

“Don’t bother; I’m going to get take out.”

“Dad, wait for me. Can we go buy some pickles?”

Ok, the kitchen is a laboratory... Do you have a laboratory in your home? Do you have a Lab. Tech to clean up after you? I'd love to hear all about it. Write me.

Have a great day.
