Don’t try to take advantage of me

Do people take advantage of you?

People try to take advantage of me and some are more sneaky that others.  Sadly, there’s nothing funny in it.

“Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.”
– Chinese proverb

This saying should really be “Take advantage of me once, shame on you but take advantage of me again, and shame on me.”

I like giving people the benefit of the doubt and hope I would get the same treatment.
Then again, maybe I’m just gullible, but I learn with each attempt that people use to take advantage of me.
I really am smarter than I look.
I will bounce back and stand tall, just like my Eucalyptus tree.

My tree guy-neighbor came to survey the yard after Hurricane Irene hit.
I was concerned with my beautiful Eucalyptus tree, leaning as close to the ground as possible.
He said it wouldn’t live and it wasn’t worth trying to prop it up and spike it down.
That was 5 weeks ago.
He didn’t know the tree was stubborn and decided not to die.  It began producing new foliage and the leaves were beautifully green.

I spoke to a Master Gardener and she was very optimistic about the tree, she said gently pull her up and week by week keep straightening her upward until she could make it on her own.
That’s what I’ll do.

When the tree guy decides to work in my yard, I will ask that my Eucalyptus be put upright because she’s a survivor, and deserves another chance.

I think I’m like my Eucalyptus tree: resilient, sturdy, sprouting new growth and willing to take what’s dished out, even hurricane winds.

Maybe you should plant a Eucalyptus tree and study her for inspiration- it's well worth it.  I'd love to hear from you, email me at aitken.helen@gmail.com

Have a wonderful weekend.
