My son, Will and I spent two weeks in eastern Europe the
beginning of August this year. We were in Budapest,
Hungary, Vienna, Austria, Bratislava, Slovakia and Prague,
Czech Republic.
Each night we would come back to our hotel and watch the
Olympics. Sometimes it would be in German and we
understood nothing. Other times the commentary would be
in British English and again we sometimes understood
nothing.
We rooted for all the athletes and had our own methods for
scoring; sometimes liking the judges' scores and other times
bashing the television verbally.
We were in awe for all the athletes that represented their
countries. What patriotism. It was mind boggling to
recognize that the difference in winning the gold and coming
in last place, could be in a thousandth of a second or a point.
I couldn't imagine training for years and competing before
large crowds, in a foreign country, unless, I could be the
comic relief for the games.
I believe there was way too much serious testosterone and
adrenaline. There should have been an Olympic event to
reduce the stress of the games; we all know that laughter is
healthy and a stress reducer. I propose that laughter be an
Olympic sport.
To set the stage for this proposal, I submit the following
video, taken during some athletic competition, perhaps at an
early Olympics. Please watch.
Now that you've seen this, what do you think?
All those in favor of having laughter at the Olympics, please raise your hand.
The hands have it.
I'd love to hear from you, and so would the Olympic Committee, so email me at aitken.helen@gmail.com
Have a great day laughing.
