Yesterday, I had the pleasure to meet the new neighbors, Marsha, Al, Oliver and a little baby that I can’t remember his name, but I’m sure I’ll learn that as soon as he’s old enough to use my cats for target practice.
They seem like a nice, young family, who, they informed me, plan to live in the house next door for the next 30 years.
That could be a good thing, or a bad thing; I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Talking over my plastic fence, Marsha said, “I think I’ve seen your name in the paper recently.”
Smiling, I said, “Really? Well I write for local papers and magazines, and so you may have seen my name in some.”
"Your name is "Aitken" isn't it?"
"Yes it is," I said.
“No, I’m thinking I saw it in the national news. Were you involved in some criminal activity recently?”
Stunned, I replied, “NO.”
“Did you have any family that got into big trouble lately?”
Looking at Scott, we both said, “No.”
“Well, I guess it wasn’t you, then.”
I suppose she’s relieved to know that I’m not the criminal element living next door; one can’t be too careful…
Just wait until I set off a few smoke alarms.
Hope you're having a great time with the neighbors. I'll keep you posted. Please write to me at aitken.helen@gmail.com.
I love getting mail.... have a great day.
